Why is my friend acting this way? Odd?

We were going to hangout Wed, but my friend canceled and rescheduled for Friday.. But never called on Friday. Today my friend finally called and said that the phone was messed up.. we did small talk then all of a sudden there was a call coming in.. my friend never called back. To be honest when my friend said it was the phone that was messed up... it sounded like a made up story. Do you think that maybe my friend decided not to talk to me anymore, but later decided to keep in touch .. We get a along pretty good and there was no reason why not to talk to me that I know of..
